About This Label
Founded in 1981 by Grant McDonagh, Zulu Records rose from the remains of the now-defunct Quintessence Records, carrying forward its spirit and essentials for Vancouver’s burgeoning punk and indie scenes. Today, it stands as one of Canada’s most beloved independent record stores and labels—nestled at 1972 West 4th Avenue in Vancouver—offering a treasure trove of new and used vinyl, CDs, 45s, turntables, and concert tickets.
More than just a retail space, Zulu has always been a hub for culture and music lovers. Known for its intimate, free in-store performances, the store has hosted a lineup of artists ranging from The XX and Kurt Vile to José González and Yo La Tengo, drawing fans into a shared love of discovery and live connection.
As a label, Zulu has championed local Vancouver talent, releasing pivotal albums by artists like Nomeansno, Perfume Tree, and Sook-Yin Lee, and compiling music from punk and indie pioneers such as The Pointed Sticks and Young Canadians.
